Bleeds, Trim & Safe Zone

Why artwork that runs to the edge needs a little extra, and where to keep your important text.

The three lines every print file has

Trim is the finished size of your piece, where the paper is cut. Bleed is extra artwork that extends past the trim line, normally 0.125" (1/8") on every side. Safe zone is an inner margin, usually 0.125"–0.25" inside the trim, where all text, logos and important details should stay.

Why bleed is needed

Commercial printers print on a larger sheet and cut it down. Cutting a stack of paper is precise, but sheets can shift a tiny amount. If your background stops exactly at the trim line, any shift leaves a thin white sliver at the edge. Extending the artwork 1/8" beyond the trim means the blade always cuts through colour.

Why the safe zone matters

The same tiny shift can move the cut inward. Text placed right against the edge can be clipped or look crowded. Keeping copy at least 1/8" inside the trim (1/4" looks better on larger pieces) protects it.

How to set up bleed

  • InDesign / Illustrator / Affinity: enter 0.125" bleed in the document setup, extend backgrounds to the red bleed guide, and export with "Use document bleed settings" and crop marks on.
  • Canva: turn on "Show print bleed", extend backgrounds, and download as "PDF Print" with "Crop marks and bleed" checked.
  • Word / Publisher: make the page 0.25" larger in each direction than the finished size and let backgrounds fill the whole page. Tell us the intended finished size.

Borders: a word of caution

A thin border close to the edge highlights any small cutting variation. If you want a border, make it generous (at least 1/4" from the trim) or leave it off.

Frequently asked questions

How much bleed do I need?
For most flat printing, 0.125" (1/8") on every side. Some large-format and bound jobs need more; we will tell you if yours does.
What if my file has no bleed?
Send it anyway. Our prepress team can often extend the edges, or we can print with a small white border. We always send a proof first.
